Who Has the Paperwork?
Pursuant to Wisconsin State Statue 59.27(4) the Washington County Sheriff’s Office handles the service of legal papers within the county that are delivered to the Sheriff’s Office. Papers for service are accepted at the Sheriff’s Office Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. excluding holidays. Arrangements for mailing papers can be made ahead of time by contacting our civil process clerk at 262-335-4382. The only exceptions to accepting and processing civil papers outside normal business hours are temporary restraining orders and injunctions. These types of papers we will accept 24/7 for service.
Only papers for service within Washington County can be accepted for service. Wisconsin State Statute 59.30 also prohibits the Sheriff’s Office from providing any legal advice or counsel to any person to commence and action or proceeding. Citizens will have to contact a private attorney of their choice for legal counsel.
Below is the fee schedule for the service of civil process papers. The collected fee is a deposit and a refund or additional fees may apply if additional attempts are done.
