How To Ride The Shared Taxi Ride

Call Ahead to Make a Reservation

Call the Shared Ride Taxi dispatch center at 262.338.2908 or 1.888.285.taxi (8294)

Please have the following information ready before calling to reserve a shared ride taxi.

  • The date you will need a taxi.
  • The time of day you wish to be picked up. Please tell the dispatcher if you have an appointment and the time of the appointment; dispatchers use a larger window to schedule a pick-up to get you to your appointment on time.

You will be asked to provide the following information:

  • Your name
  • Pick-up address (let us know which entrance, if there is more than one)
  • Number of passengers
  • Your phone number
  • Destination address (let us know which drop-off entrance, if there is more than one)
  • If a wheelchair accessible van is needed. (You must provide your own wheelchair).

You will be given a confirmation of your reservation when you call. To find out the exact time of pick-up, call the dispatch center on the day of service.

Please remember that we are a "Shared-Ride Taxi" service, and others riders will be scheduled to ride with you. Please allow extra time when scheduling to and from appointments. Every attempt will be made to get you to your destination on time.

Be Ready for Pick-Up

Once your taxi arrives, it will only wait up to 5 minutes before moving on to the next scheduled stop. Not being ready will count as a "No Show," and you will not be able to ride the Shared Ride Taxi the rest of the day. Three (3) No Shows in a 60-day period will result in a 21-day suspension. Tips to avoid a No Show:

  • Be ready to go - coat, shoes, etc. at the scheduled pick-up time;
  • Be close to the door. Drivers cannot go inside private residences or further than the lobby to assist riders;
  • Have your fare ready (cash, check, or punch card);
  • Call at least one-hour before your scheduled pick-up time to cancel a ride.

Please note that pick-ups can not be provided in areas where driveways or roads have not been cleared of snow.

Shared Ride Taxi Rules and Regulations

There will be a limit of two (2) grocery bags (or parcels of equal size) allowed onboard per person per trip. This is to allow space for a maximum number of passengers. The County reserves the right to refuse service at the next request for any "no-shows". A minimum of one-day (24 hour) advance notice is required for any person requiring specialized services (see Specialized Transportation Service).

FAQs

Do I have to call to confirm my appointment?

We want you to feel at ease with your pick-up and return so we request that you confirm your times – this way you’ll know approximately what time the shared ride taxi will be there.

What happens if I forget to cancel my scheduled ride?

A 1 hour notice is requested if you need to cancel your ride. If the taxi has been reserved for your use, we cannot provide service to another client at the same time. If you do not contact us to cancel your ride, it will be considered a “no-show” and you will not be allowed to ride for the rest of the day. Three no-shows could result in a suspension. See the no-show section for the complete policy.

Why can’t I take more than two bags of groceries?

The Shared-Ride Taxi makes many stops with clients entering and exiting the vehicle at all times. Space is needed to ensure room for all and a safe ride.

Why can’t I pick the vehicle or driver I want?

With the Shared- Ride Taxi clients are assigned to vehicles that are nearest to your pick-up or drop-off, as well as in a type of vehicle required for the client’s specific needs, such as wheelchair-lift equipped taxi. We strive to place you in a comfortable vehicle, but we are not able to assign you to one specific vehicle.

Why can’t we book a ride for our large group?

Four passengers is the largest group we can book a ride for. The Shared Ride Taxi is expected to make pick-up and drop-off stops along the way, thus room is necessary for other passengers. Taxi vehicles are not equipped to service large parties. It would be best to contact a private carrier when you have a large number of passengers to transports.

Do I have to wear a seatbelt?

Passengers must be wearing their seat belt before the taxi will move. Only a client that produces a valid prescription exempt them for the law will be allowed to ride without a seatbelt.

When does my child need to use a Car Seat/Booster?

State law mandates that any child under the age of 4 or less than 40lbs. will be secured in an approved child restraint system while riding a motor vehicle. Booster Seats are required for 4yrs but less than 8 yrs and 40lbs. but less than 80 lbs.

Can students use the Shared-Ride Taxi service for school trips?

Yes. Students ages 5–17 may use the Shared-Ride Taxi service for trips to or from school, as long as:

  • Students twelve (12) and under must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
  • The trip is booked individually (not coordinated through a school),
  • The vehicle remains open to the general public, and
  • The trip follows the same rules and fares as any other general public ride.

This service is not a school bus and does not provide exclusive transportation for students.

No Show Policy

In order to provide reliable Shared Ride Taxi services to the public, Washington County receives grants from the State of Wisconsin and the Federal Transit Administration. We have been awarded these funds, and it is our duty to make sure they are used in a cost effective and efficient manner.

A No Show is defined as:

  • A client not being present when driver arrives for pick up (see note about pick up times).
  • The client not being ready within 5 minutes of when driver arrives for your scheduled pick up time.
  • The client calls to cancel a ride less than 1 hour prior to their scheduled pick up time or cancels the
ride at the door when the driver arrives.
  • Not having the required fare for the ride.

Please note about pick up times:

If one has an appointment pick up, this means the shared ride taxi could arrive one (1) hour prior to your appointment time. For example one has a doctor appointment or a start time for work; let’s say for 9:00am.This means that the shared ride taxi could arrive as early as 8:00am to make sure you arrive at your appointment time. A regular pick time has a 30 minute window. For example if one requests a pick up time for 3:00pm, the shared ride taxi could arrive from 3:00pm to 3:30pm. On the day of your ride, one can always call to confirm a more exact pick up time so one does not have to worry about a no show.

Consequences of No Shows

When the shared ride taxi driver arrives for a client and the client cannot be located, the driver will notify dispatch the client is not present. At that time dispatch will attempt to contact the passenger. If the client cannot be contacted within five minutes, the driver will be advised by dispatch of a No Show and proceed on with their route.

Note: At no time will the shared ride taxi No Show a dialysis client, who is at the dialysis clinic under treatment, unless advised by the client and/or the dialysis clinic.

  1. Three No Shows occurring within a rolling 60-day period will result in a 21-day suspension of service.
  2. After the first two No Shows within a rolling 60-day period, dispatch will call the client and issue him/her a warning and advise the client of the policy.
  3. After the third No Show a 21-day suspension will be instated by the County Transit Manager and the contract provider daily manager.
  4. The client can either appeal the suspension for reinstatement, in writing; to the Washington County Transit Manager, see address at bottom of page, (the appeal must address all three No Shows). OR
  5. The client can be reinstated for service and have the suspension lifted by paying a fine of $10.00. The No Show fine must be paid to the driver when the client schedules their next ride or in person at the shared ride taxi dispatch office (1145 Lang Street, West Bend, WI 53090). The client must notify dispatch that this is the action the client will be taking. If the fine is not paid at the client’s next scheduled ride the client will not be able to ride until the fine is paid.
  6. Further habitual violations and/or excessive No Shows may result in additional periods of suspension of service up to and including ineligibility to use the Shared Ride Taxi Service.

Specialized Transportation Services

Taxi service is available for disabled individuals who require special door-to-door assistance from the taxi operator within all of Washington County and the northern portion of Menomonee Falls.

Notice must be given when making a reservation if the passenger is in a wheelchair or requires special door-to-door assistance. A one-day advance reservation is required for specialized services. Additional time is needed to load and unload passengers in a wheelchair; please be considerate of other passengers.

Residents of a skilled nursing facility will not be transported unless they are accompanied by an attendant or a family member.
