Authority: Lieutenant Hope Demler 108

On Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at 1:41 PM, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a garage fire, at 3470 Sherman Rd in the Town of Polk, Washington County.

Washington County Sheriff’s Deputies and the Jackson Fire Department responded to the scene. The homeowner reported that the detached garage was on fire. The homeowner evacuated 2 pigs safely from the garage. The homeowner moved a vehicle safely away from the burning structure. However, there was another vehicle that was parked near the garage that was unable to be moved. The garage was a 20 X 22-foot single story structure.

The garage was approximately 20 feet from the house, a two-story cape cod-style home. The occupants were able to evacuate safely. Prior to the fire being extinguished, the fire spread to the north side of the residence causing damage to several windows, the wood siding and the roof. The fire also spread to a pick-up truck that was parked in the driveway near the southeast corner of the garage. The pick-up truck sustained driver side paint damage, tire damage, and a broken window.

Fire personnel arrived on scene and extinguished the fire. The garage and contents inside were a total loss. Damage to the garage and contents were estimated at $63,000. The damage to the residence was estimated at $30,000.

The homeowner was cooking hamburgers on a gas grill inside the garage prior to the fire. The grill was left operating and unattended inside the garage. The homeowner observed leaves on fire near the gas grill, and the fire quickly spread in the garage. The cause of fire appears to be accidental.

Personnel from the following fire departments responded: Jackson, Slinger, Richfield, Germantown, and West Bend. WE Energies assisted on scene.

There were no injuries to citizens or animals. No fire or sheriff personnel were injured.
